You’ve heard of tattoos before right? The Bieber is building up a collection and Rihanna has a few, but would you ever want to get one yourself when you’re older? The tattoo is a design on the skin, made with ink or pigment. The thing about tattoos is - they’re permanent. They don’t grow out like a bad hairstyle, or wash away like make up, so it’s really important to know the consequences and risks associated with getting a tattoo.

Risky business:
Getting a tattoo isn’t like that time your BFF drew on your arm with a marker pen...they are made with needles that penetrate the skin. Yes, it hurts, and yes, it’s pretty normal to bleed. It’s important that the tattoo parlour is kept nice and clean too, as if the tattoo is not given in a clean environment, you could pick up an infection. Ugh! Ok, not so glamorous. So, anyone who is smart will be prepared to handle a little pain, and do their homework on different tattoo parlours before they visit. If you’re not too good at handling pain and a bit of blood, tattoos probably aren’t for you.

Have a good reason:
Remember, a tattoo is with you for the rest of your life, so you need to be really sure you want one! It’s tricky, if you choose a tattoo at the age of 18, the chances of you still being fond of it at the age of 60 are pretty slim. Be careful too, because some career choices won’t like tattoos. Have you ever seen an air hostess with ink on her arm? Tattoos can be a great way to express your personality, but it’s so important to think about it carefully before you get it done, as laser treatment to get it removed can be very pricey.

You’re how old?
To get a tattoo, you must be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger than that, you can get one with parental permission. If you do decide to get one when you’re a little older, take time to decide which design you’d like. Take inspiration from what you love, or who you love. You can always get a temporary tattoo too! These are lots of fun, because you can be as creative as you like and change them as often as you like.

Whatever you decide to do, don’t take this decision lightly! There’s plenty of time for tattoos in the future, so don’t rush to get inked right away. What are your thoughts on tattoos? We’d love to hear from you, so send us your comments. Tattoo for now!
